Real Time RBC Stiffness Evaluation using Micro Channel & High Speed Vision

[Abstract]


It is well known that some deseases affect the stiffness of the red blood cells (RBC). For example, the RBC infected with Malaria gets stiffer than the normal RBC. Therefore, the high speed stiffness evaluation system is needed at the medical fronts. In this research, we evaluate the cell stiffness by using the microchannel(*) and focus on the passing time of the cells in the narrow channel; the passing time gets longer as the cell is stiffer.
We also utilize the high speed vision system so that we can capture the cells in the channel which move at high velocities. The high speed image processing enables the real time measurement of the passing time of the cells. From the experiment, we confirmed that the passing time of the spherical RBC gets five times longer than that of the normal RBC.

The Advantage of High Speed Vision
The most advantage using the high speed vision is that "we can see what is happening actually". In fact, there may be some other methods which can achieve the real time measurement. We can cite an example method using electric impedance. However, in this method we can only get the "numerical value" and cannot know the actual condition in the channel from the numerical value.
On the other hand, the high speed vision system can pick up and save the image data if we need. By making the most of these image data, we can double-check the accuracy of the measurement.
